Lina Lombo, BMSc candidate

Undergraduate Research Intern

University of Western Ontario (UWO) - Mass General Hospital

Lina Lombo is an undergraduate research intern working with us on a clinical project investigating the neuromodulating effects of Transcutaneous auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS) in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Lina is in her last year of a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMSc) program with a concentration in Pathology and Physiology at the University of Western Ontario (UWO).  Lina worked for two years as an undergraduate research fellow in the Beier Lab at UWO where she worked on two research projects: one aimed at evaluating the effects of western diet and PPAR-delta in osteoarthritic synovitis and the other focusing on categorizing the distinct phenotypes of osteoarthritis.

During this time, she gained significant experience in musculoskeletal research and presented the results of her work at scientific conferences. Lina is also president and writer of the Rare Disease Review, a student-run health policy and medical research journal focused on rare diseases and their societal impact.

Lina is interested in exploring the role of the vagus nerve on peripheral inflammation and modulation of neurological and psychiatric conditions. She also aims to gain experience in clinical neuroscience. In the future, she plans to pursue a career as a physician. Lina’s background in musculoskeletal research and her interest in clinical neuroscience is a great fit for our taVNS study.

In her free time, Lina is an avid runner, enjoys hiking and traveling.  .
